Let’s talk deodorants today!

I’ve been aware for some time now that the aluminum in most of our deodorants is totally not good for you, never mind any of the other chemicals in them.

My quest to change my deodorant was triggered two years ago on two occasions. First, my dear Aunt was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and brought this scary disease all too close to home. Second, at the same time of learning this news I was experiencing pectoral pain that led me to see my doctor. While her examination ruled strained ligaments causing the pain, at the same time she unexpectedly found a small tiny lump in my armpit. I was shocked, I could barely feel it when she pointed it out to me. To explore this further I was booked a mammogram. I remember feeling scared and 10 million emotions barreling through my head.

Good news is the mammogram ruled out anything concerning regarding the lump. This triggered change in me. And ultimately my quest to also change my deodorant and be more aware of not only what I put in my body, but also on it.

So I hit the organic aisle of my grocery store and health food stores to investigate what my options are.

I initially tried the deodorant powder from lush. It was good, but I hated the application. It was very messy. Then Kiss My Face Active Life Sport – it had a nice scent. But it left a weird film that once dry made it look like my skin was peeling. So I knew this wasn’t for me.

Which later led me to try Tom’s natural deodorant, which I too wasn’t pleased with.

I still wasn’t thrilled with any of these products. Short of going au natural, which lets be honest wasn’t top of my list. At the same time, I had been reading a lot about LAVINALA a “Healthy Deodorant”, and at a hefty price of $18 cad I was really wanting to try it.

I have only been able to find it at Sephora. My store only had one scent,so I purchased the Vanilla Lavender.

Let me tell you it was love at first scent – ha ha! But seriously the smell is amazing, not too perfumey, not too sweet, just right. I love that it’s still applied like a solid deodorant. It doesn’t leave any film or white chalkiness. It withstands my workouts and the daily every day hecticness of my life.

LAVANILA states the product is:
-Superior odor protection with our Beta glucan technology
– No Aluminum. No Paraben. No Propylene Glycol
– High quality essential oils deliver a burst of freshness
– Nourishes with antioxidants—great for sensitive skin
– Velvet soft solid infused with aloe goes on sheer and doesn’t stain

Also cruelty free and Vegan. Bonus! It comes in many other scents and an unscented version.

Lets set something straight… this is not an anti-perspersant. In fact, we are suppose to sweat. It’s our body’s way of cooling down, and eliminating toxins to name a few. Deodorants fights odor by killing bacteria, while antiperspirants does that and stops your sweat glands temporarily with an aluminum compound.

I can honestly say I will not go back. It’s worth the money, you can also purchase them in travel sizes which I happen to score at a Sephora in California on a recent vacation.

I’m happy to share the lump is now completely gone! Coincidence? I think not.

Share with me… do you have a favourite “healthy” deodorant?

If you are into exploring other brands, I am really liking Routine. They have a sampler pack that allows you to try different formulas and scents to find what suits your body best. Plus, it a local Calgary company, so it feels good to support local as well. Worth a try!

I have tried twice to post a comment on this post but for some reason it won’t accept my email address. Anyway, my comment is below but if you want me to post it and have any tips on how to make it work, let me know. Thanks!

Thanks for the great post. I think it is important for us to use the least amount of chemicals as possible. I recently started making my own deodorant. It is coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot starch and grapefruit extract. The coconut oil and baking soda both have antibacterial properties and help prevent odor. The grapefruit extract has antibacterial and antiseptic qualities (which I also use in my DIY cleaning products). I have recently been experimenting with natural shampoo and conditioners but haven’t found one I like, any suggestions????????

Wow you make your own?!That’s fantastic! you’ll have to send me the recipe. As far as hair products and make-up is still a works in progress for me. But right now I like the UNITE brand for hair products. It’s not “perfect” but is sulfate-free, paraben-free, sodium chloride-free, non-animal tested (PETA certified)

I definitely want to try this, I too worry about the amount of aluminum and other ingredients in typical deodorant and I have tried a ton of different items, just like you! I even tried a natural stick with lemongrass, but it ruined my t-shirts!
I just need a Sephora to come to Puerto Vallarta!
